History as Uganda's Yoweri Museveni attends presidential debate

Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni has taken part in his first televised debate ahead of elections on February 18.

Because Museveni has never participated in such a debate during his reign in office, the moment was historic.

The eight presidential candidates contesting Thursday’s poll focused on foreign policy and national security issues, while touching on other topics.

Most observers thought Mr Museveni maintained his composure and made concise points.

The 71-year-old leader is seeking to extend his 30-year rule in the east African country in an election that he is widely expected to win.

However, according to political analysts, this election will be his toughest political contest yet as his main opponents Kizza Besigye, a popular opposition figure, and Amama Mbabazi, his former prime minister, have both been drawing huge crowds during the campaigns.

The veteran leader has turned down debate invitations in the past and refused to attend a first debate held on January 15, saying he was too busy campaigning.
